Sat, 14 Jan 2012

With Llangefni having lost to Rhuthun the week before and Caernarfon just winning against Nant Conwy; Llangefni are in a battle to step free of the relegation zone and Caernarfon keen to retain their number one place in the league. The game kicked off in perfect weather conditions, fine, dry with no wind, and with the pitch firm under foot it was a game to be enjoyed.

For the first 15 minutes of the game Llangefni held their own, keeping the Cofi`s at bay with no real threat to their defences. Caernarfon scored the first try of the day however from deep in Llangefni territory, gaining turn over ball in the ruck, the ball was quickly fed out and with good passing of the ball, taking in the Llangefni defenders, the ball eventually passed back inside to the supporting forwards to flanker Llywarch Davies who seeing the open field ran the remaining distance, try to Caernarfon, successfully converted by the ever dependable centre half Kelvin Morris 0 – 7 to Caernarfon.

The next 15 minutes saw Caernarfon gallop away scoring a further two tries, the first by centre Iolo Huws and the second by flanker Llywarch Davies, both successfully converted by Morris, the score after 30 minutes Llangefni 0, Caernarfon 21.

Llangefni tried in vain to come back at the Cofi`s and were for a while camped in the Caernarfon 22 meter area. From a Caernarfon knock on, a scrum was awarded to Llangefni. The ball came out and retained by the forwards who made the hard work of going through the phases, pick up and drive, pick up and drive, which saw Caernarfon give away a penalty, coming in from the side in the ruck. Needing the points, Llangefni kicked out to the 5 meter line for line out. The ball was cleanly received by the Cefni forwards and in the ruck that followed, for illegal use of the boot, Llangefni centre half Llyr Hughes was called over by referee Iwan Williams, shown the red card, Cefni down to 14 men for the remainder of the game. Caernarfon regained their attacking ways and before the half time managed to score a further two tries, both by centre Iolo Huws and both successfully converted by Kelvin Morris, the score at half time Llangefni 0, Caernarfon 35.

Llangefni kicked off the second half and for periods of play with good possession they did threaten the Caernarfon defences. From deep in Caernarfon territory, the ball came loose to Caernarfon who kicked up field finding space behind the Llangefni defences. With the chase for the ball on, confusion between two defending Llangefni players allowed the attacking Caernarfon winger Lance Williams to kick the ball further up field before he was able to pick up and score under the post, successfully converted by Morris, 0 – 42.

Play continued with Llangefni coming back again at the visitors, and from a Llangefni throw in some 10 meters from the Caernarfon try line, the ball was cleanly received passing across the field and back to the hands of Llangefni captain no. 8 Iestyn Dafydd who went through the gap in defence and over for the try, successfully converted by centre half Carwyn Milburn, 7 – 42. Play continued and for going over the top in a ruck situation, having been warned more than once by referee Mr. Williams Caernarfon second row Mathew Bohana was shown the yellow card, 10 minutes sin bin. With both teams now down to 14 men play continued, but it was Caernarfon who sealed the day when winger Gwil Jones received the ball and seeing an open field ran with ball in hand and cutting in to under the posts, successfully converted by Kelvin Morris, the score are full time Llangefni 7, Caernarfon 49.
