With a fine win against Pwllheli youths last weekend, and with only the one game lost so far this season, Llangefni Youth were looking to extend their winning ways and take another win. Winning convincingly 27 – 8 they did a clinical job of it.
With Llangefni kicking off with wind advantage Rhuthun were able to take possession and with ball in hand, through the phases they managed to get up to the half way line before the ball went into a ruck situation and for illegal hands in the ruck by Rhuthun, penalty awarded to Llangefni. Centre Rhodri Parry taking the long kick, but with wind advantage the ball was neatly put between the posts, first points of the game 3 – 0.
Play continued with both sides making inroads into the others territory. From a Cefni lineout, the ball was neatly taken and passed back to scrum half Aled Jones who seeing the gap up field kicked for territory into the Rhuthun half, but with a quick chase putting the Rhuthun defences under attack the Rhuthun player kicked out for lineout to Llangefni. This second line out again cleanly taken by Cefni , followed by a run up field by Cefni No. 8 gaining valuable territory and taking in the defences; on being tackled he was able to pass cleanly to his scrum half Aled Jones who was able to carry the ball over for the first try of the game. With a missed conversion however, the score 8 – 0.
Play continued and for a Rhuthun infringement near the half way line, a scrum awarded to Llangefni. The ball came out clean to Cefni centre half Sior Hughes who was able to make ground before passing wide to his scrum half Aled Jones, who ran over the line for his second try, successfully converted by centre Rhodri Parry, the score 15 – 0.
A further penalty awarded to Llangefni some minutes later, Rhuthun going over the top in the ruck and some five metres inside the Llangefni territory from the half way line, the confident Cefni centre Rhodri Parry wanted another go at goal, but with a blustering wind it was not to be, just wide of the posts, the score remaining 15 – 0.
Llangefni continued to play and making progress into the Rhuthun territory, when some 30 metres from the Rhuthun try line Rhuthun were found off side, another penalty to Llangefni, but again with strong blustery winds the ball went wide of the posts, 15 – 0.
With a change of fortune, as Llangefni were on the attack, the ball came down to ruck situation and for holding on, Rhuthun were awarded a penalty which they took with a quick tap of the ball, their centres making a piercing run at the Cefni defences and on the Cefni 30 metre line for being found off side Rhuthun were awarded a further penalty which they kicked for territory in an effort to get the throw in, but the wind kept the ball in play, Cefni regain possession moving forward with the ball but with an incident off the ball both sides erupted into a free for all, the referee stopping play and calling both captains over for a warning. Play continued for the remaining of the first half the score remaining 15 – 0 at the whistle.
Second half saw Rhuthun kick off with wind to their backs. They came back a stronger more determined side and for the first half of the second half threw everything at Llangefni. Despite their valiant efforts camped in the Llangefni half they were beaten by the Cefni defences who managed time and time again to stop the advancing Rhuthun attack. Rhuthun were awarded a penalty, Llangefni deliberately killing ball, taken by Rhuthun centre Robin Cartwright, the score 15 – 3.
Play continued and Rhuthun continued to dominate. From a Rhuthun line out some 30 metres from the Cefni try line, cleanly taken and passed out to the centres who went with the ball to the Cefni 5 metre line, ruck formed and passed out to second row Huw Ffoulkes seeing the gap in the Cefni defence he went over the line for a try, but with missed conversion the score went to 15 – 8.
Play continued and a wakeup call for Llangefni. Rhuthun were in possession of the ball when they kicked a high ball deep into Cefni territory. Cleanly caught by Cefni full back who ran at the Rhuthun defence passing out to his centres running up field taking in the Rhuthun defence before the ball came back to Cefni hooker Lewis Williams who went over in the corner for Llangefi`s third try, with a missed conversion 20 – 8.
To finish the game off Llangefni dominated the remainder of the game with winger Gethin Jones sealing the bonus point and fourth try, converted by centre Rhodri Parry, the final score 27 – 8.
Llangefni Youths travel to Rhyl and District next weekend when they hope to continue their winning ways.
