With Mold having beaten Rhuthun the week before, yet struggling behind Llangefni in the league, Mold wanted another scalp, which they got and deservedly so, winning 36 points to 13.
With referee Carl Hyde in charge, Mold kicked off, kicking deep into Llangefni territory and into Cefni possession who ran back at the charging Mold forwards. The ball came loose and was kicked out of play by the visitors for Mold to take the first line out of the day. Cleanly taken, but with Cefni found in an offside position, the first penalty of the day went to Mold. Kicked by Centre Half Steve Quentin, the ball went wide of the posts, a reprieve for the visitors.
Play continued with both sides making good inroads into each other`s opponents territory. From a Mold line out, Mold took the ball into a driving maul and managed to push Llangefni back some 10 – 15 meters before Cefni were penalised for bringing the maul down, penalty to Mold. Kicked out by Centre Half Quentin at the Cefni 5 meter line, Mold throw in, the ball came out to the Mold centres, through two pairs of hands to Inside centre Cai Edwards who took the ball over the line, first try to Mold, successfully converted by Centre Half Steve Quentin, 7 – 0 to Mold.
Play continued and from a Llangefni throw in, cleanly taken and passed out wide, Mold was found offside, penalty awarded to Llangefni which Centre Half Carwyn Milburn took, slotting the ball between the posts, 7 – 3. Play continued in an ugly fashion by both teams, with penalties galore being awarded. In the end referee Carl Hyde spoke with both team captains warning that too many penalties had been awarded, the next no doubt calling for a yellow card.
Play continued and from a penalty awarded to Mold, they kicked up field deep into Llangefni territory to find line out position just 10 meters from the Cefni goal line. The Mold throw in was cleanly taken, passing through forwards hands to prop Aled Ellis who went over the line, second try to Mold, successfully converted by Quentin, 14 – 3. It was wake up time for Llangefni who came back hard at their hosts. From a Llangefni scrum, the ball came out and passed out wide, knock on by Llangefni, but referee Mr. Hyde had first caught Mold offside, penalty awarded to Cefni, but with a missed kick at goal, the score remained 14 – 3.
Llangefni continued to put the pressure on the Mold forwards and for a knock on some 7 meters from the Mold try line a scrum was awarded to Llangefni. In the first two scrums, Mold were found coming up in the scrum, referee Mr. Hyde calling for another scrum to be formed, Cefni put in, but at the third scrum, Mold collapsed under the pressure, penalty try awarded to Llangefni, successfully converted by Milburn, the score 14 – 10, which was the half time score.
Llangefni kicked off the second half with everything to play for, just minutes into the game, a penalty awarded to Llangefni. Mold found coming in from the side in a ruck situation, saw Centre Half Carwyn Milburn kick through the posts and taking the score to within one point, 14 – 13. Play continued and Llangefni seemed to run out of steam, allowing Mold come back at them to score a further three tries; Prop Mark Padget, No. 8 Chris Lewis and Outside Centre Richard Hopkins, two conversions by Centre Half Steve Quentin and a penalty by the safe boots of Quentin. The situation was not helped when undisciplined Llangefni were down to 14 men, Inside Centre Greg Horseman being yellow carded for deliberately knocking down, an interception of a Mold pass, sin bin 10 minutes, which went on for some 13 minutes before referee Mr. Hyde allowed him back in play.
The game closed 36 points to 13, Mold deserved victors. Llangefni entertain Bethesda next weekend at Cae Smyrna. The local derby, with Bethesda just ahead of Llangefni in the league. An interesting game!
