With perfect conditions for playing rugby and having had their first win against Llandudno the weekend before, Llangefni were looking for their first win at home against Rhuthun. But it was not to be in the first half with poor tackling from Cefni and having had two try opportunities from Cefni breakaway runs, the Rhuthun defence were strong and withstood any form of Cefni attack.
The first half saw Rhuthun score two tries, John Gill the first and Gethin Hughes the second, both being converted by Jason Morris. Again indiscipline by the home outfit saw prop Arwyn Roberts yellow carded for a deliberate knock down of a Rhuthun ball, Rhuthun in attack. The score at half time 0 – 14.
Cefni came back in the second half however; from a scrum awarded to the hosts, a strong pack pushed the Rhuthun pack backwards over the line, Cefni No. 8 Alun Roberts falling on the b all for their first try, successfully converted by winger Carwyn Milburn, the sore 7 – 14.
Play continued, with Llangefni gaining confidence from their first try at home. With Rhuthun weakening at the ruck, they gave an opportunity for Cefni to add further points, when a penalty was awarded to Cefni from a Rhuthun infringement in the ruck, successful taken by winger Milburn, the score 10 – 14.
Llangefni took control of the game the second half and from an excellent break on the half way line by lock forward John Hughes who ran up field gaining territory, reaching 10 meters from the Rhuthun line when he was brought to the ground by a strong defensive tackle, but an infringement by Rhuthun on the ground saw a further penalty awarded to Llangefni, which winger Milburn successfully slotted, 13 – 14.
The game intensified with Llangefni pulling the stops out for that home win. Scrum half Mark Gray with ball in hand and supported by winger William Samuel Owen, they ran up field passing from one to the other, taking defender after defender before srum half Mark Gray reached the try line, a superb try, converted by winger Milburn, the score 20 – 14.
A further penalty awarded to Cefni saw winger Carwyn Milburn again put a further 3 points on the scoreboard and final score at full time 23 – 14.
Llangefni travel to Caernarfon next weekend when they expect a tough and challenging game.
